Epic Alignment

Pushing Limits; Finding Meaning

It was an epic day in the nation’s capital in so many ways. Pushing limits and finding meaning.

Note about the image. This is, of course, me. I am about to enter the security portion of the entrance to the DC fireworks by the Washington Monument after waiting two-plus hours in the 100+ degree heat.

Mysterious Context

July 4, 2026, was a day of epic alignment. Two hundred and fifty years prior, the original leaders of the thirteen American colonies released the Declaration of Independence from the British monarchy. The nation that emerged from that rebellion, the United States of America, was built on the longest-surviving written national constitution in continuous use. The 2.5 million people in 1776 grew to almost 350 million in 2026, a growth of 140 times the original number.

To celebrate the semi quincentennial, a set of events was planned for the nation’s capital, Washington, DC. These included a world record show featuring 850,000 fireworks. The Great American State Fair filled the National Mall with booths representing the 50 states, the US territories, and various government agencies. Hours of flyovers included the Blue Angels AND the Thunderbirds, both the current and new version of Air Force One, as well as B-1, F-18, F-22, and other bombers.

Note about the image. This is part of a demonstration of jets during the hours of flyovers. This picture was taken by Jack from where he was in line.

Not to be outdone by manmade records, nature dialed up record heat for celebration weekend. With temperatures over 100 and “feels like” temperatures up to 115 degrees, the US Capital was ablaze for the semi quincentennial. And the evening of July 4th included several waves of lightning-infused storms.

Where was I during this over-the-top confluence of celebrations, heat, and storms?

I was next to my pyrotechnician husband in the epicenter next to the Washington Monument. This once-in-a-lifetime experience didn’t kill me, but it certainly tried. Over the weekend, hundreds collapsed from the extreme heat.

Note about the image. This is the line my husband and I were in on 14th street. If you look carefully in the upper left corner, you will see three men on the roof protecting us.

On the 4th, lightning danced around the periphery of DC for hours, all while I was outside. Flyovers were suspended after 7:30 p.m. People gathered for the fireworks and related celebrations were evacuated; with events resuming three hours later.

The fireworks finally started at moments before midnight.

Mysterious Alignment

What I really want to tell you is about a young man whose evening was aligned with mine. In a sea of over three hundred thousand people, he sat down next to my husband and in the bleachers at the July 4th fireworks show in Washington, DC. This alignment happened during the evacuation of the event around the Washington Monument because of incoming storms with lightning. After leaving the metal bleachers for the evacuation, my husband and I had returned because we thought the event was resuming. We were wrong; the evacuation was still in effect.

As the officers approached, we left the bleachers without a thought to the whereabouts of the young man who briefly had been seated next to us.

Thousands of people meandered the secure area, trying to avoid leaving. All had been in line for two or more hours to get through security into the fenced area around the monument and were hesitant to exit. Plus, the storm was parting around us on both sides, with no threat to our exact location. I and my husband decided to sit on the grass behind a large tent, along with many others, hoping to stay in the secured area until the event resumed.

Note about the image. I took this picture during the evacuation. Notice the storm parting to either side of the Washington Monument and the people milling about in various directions, most not towards an exit.

The young man who had been briefly seated by us in the bleachers approached us, sat on the grass next to me, and asked if he could stick with us. Half our age, he was at the event alone, with fatigue setting in. I was happy for the company, as was my husband. We had hoped our son, close in age to our visitor, would have joined us for the fireworks. A local, our son decided to avoid the chaos and stay home. The mysterious gift of a stranger’s presence filled a gap in the vision my husband and I had imagined for the evening.

As we sat together on the grass, I asked the young man where he was from and what work he did. From Utah, he worked with children for a charitable organization. Included in his response was the statement, “I lost my mom a couple of years ago, before I turned 30.” He told me about his younger sister, but made no mention of a father, and I didn’t ask him.

We and many others were content to loiter on the grass, however, the officers directing people to evacuate became more insistent. Many, including the three of us, rose to our feet to reluctantly move towards an exit. At this point I asked our young companion for his name. Shaking hands, Jack introduced himself. I responded with,

“I’m Cindy, and this is my husband, David.”

Jack’s face transformed with awe, glowing with recognition of a divinely orchestrated moment.

He softly replied, “My mom’s name was Cindy.”

I smiled, accepting my maternal assignment for the evening. This was more than a random alignment in the mass of strangers.

Note about the image. This is a picture taken by Jack; this is the line he was in for the event. This line was approaching from the opposite direction from us, also on 14th street.

Fast-forwarding through the next two hours, our three-some exited the secure area, waited for the event to reopen, returned through security, and eventually resumed sitting in the metal bleachers, choosing a better spot than previously.

While waiting for the festivities to resume, I asked Jack to tell me about his mother. He shared how she loved children, ran day care centers, and cared for he and his sister. During the COVID pandemic she was isolated from him, had deteriorated into a nonverbal state of dementia, and died at 48. I asked about the last time he had been with her and asked if she still knew him. He told me how he held her hand and sensed she may have recognized him.

“She knew,” I assured him.

We continued chatting and waited for the program to restart. I suggested he and I exchange phone numbers so we could stay in touch. He agreed. I also shared how his presence with us that night also filled a gap, not having pictured ourselves at the fireworks without family.

Note about the image. This was our view of the fireworks being shot from several barges. I included a link in the first part of this message where you can see the entire show.

Eventually the program of music, the president’s speech, and the fireworks filled the night. At the end, we stood to leave. I had pondered if we would shake hands or something, having clearly made an important connection.

He threw open his arms for a hug, to which I reciprocated. Then we disappeared back into the sea of strangers from whence we had been drawn.

Almost 1 A.M., finding our way back to our son’s home was another epic experience. Trapped on the wrong side of security fencing along 17th street, we were unable to head in the desired direction until we were downtown. Normally a two-mile walk became three-and-a-half; we finally arrived at our destination at 2:30 AM. I don’t have a step monitor, but I am fairly confident I set a personal record that night.

Mysterious Meaning

Pushing limits of temperature, fireworks, constitutional longevity, storms, and personal endurance, July 4, 2026, marked an epic alignment. At the convergence of these vectors, in a mass of strangers, an orphan found a family for the evening, and I found meaning as a mother.

What does this all mean? I’m still peeling back the layers of this mystery. A stranger in an ocean of strangers, my life was connected with another child. When I told my daughter the story, she later summarized it by matter-of-factly saying to her husband, “We have another sibling.” Honestly, I don’t think she’d be surprised if I invited him to a future family gathering. She’s watched me “adopt” other young adults who needed a season of mothering.

This, however, is the first “adoption” of a non-biologically-related person. I’ve adopted nieces and nephews, but nothing “random” like a stranger at a fireworks show. Will I see Jack again? How long will we stay in touch? That mystery will only unfold in time.

What does it mean for you? I don’t know. Perhaps be open to mysterious assignments of people who need something you have to provide, even if those individuals are not family members or friends. If it could happen in the epic alignments on July 4, 2026, in a mass of people in Washington, DC, it could certainly happen to you wherever you are. We don’t need to be strangers with strangers. Doing so might pass up beautiful connections in the most unlikely of places.

Connecting With Mystery

Dear Lord of All Mystery, thank You for orchestrating alignments between strangers along the crowded path of life. Personally, I thank You for moving in Jack’s heart to stick with my husband and I on the fourth of July 2026. Bless him and all orphans who need mothers in their lives, no matter how grown-up they might appear to be. Open our hearts to each other, filling the empty places with a love shared through You. Amen.

Notes from Dr. Mac

I suggest you go to Bible Gateway and ponder what Jesus said about orphans in John 14:18.
